CAMPBELL'S REPLICA SEXTANT- SMALL
Nauticalia replica is dedicated to Royal Navy Captain John Campbell, who developed the instrument in 1757. Crucially his invention appeared at about the same time as the first accurate, portable chronometers - and the combination of the two transformed navigation from guesswork to science, saving countless lives at sea. This importance gave rise to the air of mystique which surrounds the instrument and its use, even in today's age of electronic wizardry. This quarter-size version is an irresistible "must-have" for the desks of instrument collectors and nautical enthusiasts. Sextant measures: 10 x 12 cm, box: 13 x 13 cm.

GALILEO GLOBE, 34 cm
Nauticalia distinctive ornamental (but functional) thermometers utilise 17-th century astronomer Galileo Galilei's discovery that the density of liquids varies with temperature. Carefully weighted glass globes are suspended in a liquid-filled tube, where they sedately sink or float as the surrounding air gets hotter or colder. Temperature is indicated by the engraved brass tag on the lowest floating globe. Temperature is shown in Celsius. Termometer height: 34 cm.

PIONEER...
PIONEER STORM BOTTLE since 1750
Atmospheric pressure? Temperature? Electrical disturbances? The simple fact is, no one is quite sure how a storm bottle works. Or indeed how accurate it is. Nevertheless aboard HMS Beagle during the Darwin Expeditions of 1831-36 Captain Robert Fitzroy developed and refined the storm bottle (invented in the mid 18-th century) and suggested that changes in crystal formation could be used to predict quite subtle changes in the weather. Now of course from a purely practical point of view there are sophisticated electronic weather stations that will give you a far more reliable local forecast. But...there's something utterly fascinating about this sort of instrument - so admired by the early Victorians - that bridges the divide between the magic of alchemy and the pragmatism of science. And attractively mounted for wall or shelf display, our storm bottle - with its constantly changing pattern of clouds, streamers and fronds - makes a wonderful conversation piece. Plus, it's probably accurate at least 50 % of the time! Measurements: 45 x 15 cm.

ADIE BA...
ADIE BAROMETER since 1818
In 1818 Alexander Adie patented his Sympiesometer. Although the name was a bit of a tongue twister, the instrument was so simple to operate and so accurate that it quickly became popular. Indeed it was used by Sir James Clark Ross on his Antarctic expeditions. Referred to nowadays as a Tendency Barometer, it consists of two glass tubes filled with liquids: blue for temperature and red for air pressure, plus a tendency scale. Comparing the levels of the liquids and then setting the pointer on the tendency scale (which converts pressure readings in hPa to millibars) enables you to make accurate local weather forecasts. And if you're in a hurry, general weather trends can be seen at a glance. For example, if the levels of the two fluids are equal, the conditions are changeable. Red below the blue? That means high pressure and good weather. Low pressure and ensuing bad weather is indicated by the level of the red fluid being above the blue. Mounted in a handsome wooden frame, our Tendency Barometer is suitable for free standing or wall hanging display. Measurements: 45 x 15 cm.
